A to Z Challenge | C is for Comfort 11

Day 3 of the A to Z Challenge, my theme is mental health.

C is for… Comfort

What makes you feel better when you’re feeling low? What makes you feel relaxed at the end of a long day? What do you reach for to make yourself more comfortable?

When you struggle with your mental health and you can’t find comfort in your own mind it’s even more important to find some physical comfort. Often I reach for chocolate, cookies and ice cream. Many reach for alcohol and cigarettes. But I’ve been seeking out some more natural ways to bring some comfort when I’m in a dark, worried, panicked place.

When I feel low I often feel cold, tired and numb. Then I need something to bring me comfort and make me feel more comfortable. I have read about weighted blankets having a comforting and relaxing effect for good sleep and to help with anxiety, depression, autism, stress and sensory disorders. I guess, like swaddling a baby, it makes you feel warm, secure and relaxed. The way I achieve the same affect is by curling up on the sofa under two blankets! It makes me feel safe and cosy. I have a favourite hoody which is really soft and comfortable. Sometimes if I’m feeling low and struggle to get out of bed I wear some really comfortable clothes to help me get up and face the day feeling safe and (sort of) relaxed.

Hygge is also another way I get some comfort. Lighting candles, cosying up under blankets, eating good food, listening to good music and watching a film. And I love to have cuddles with my Labrador Milly, the namesake of this blog and my best girly.

How about you? Have you got any tips to bring more comfort into your life?

Thankyou for reading,

Lx

Agree with your your views about comfort. Even I like music & to change into comfortable clothes 🙂
Foods & scents etc also enhance the comfort-level.
    May all feel comfortable.

My main comfort in life for the last five years has been to turn to my dog, Ollie. He seems to always know when I am not at my best. He will sit close, and appear to want more attention. I believe it is his way of giving me attention though. Pets ask for nothing, and never judge.
(By the way, did you know that your email post notifications always appear twice, at the same time? Not a problem, but I thought I would tell you.)
    Best wishes, Pete.

We both know the value of our dogs. Milly really is such a huge part of my wellbeing and maintaining my mental health. With the email notifications – I don’t think that’s anything I can change and think it’s because you might have signed up to the new site but I transferred followers over as well. Perhaps see if it’s anything in your settings that you can change? Or just like and comment on my posts twice 😊

I realised that you would get that dog connection with Milly. The double notifications are no problem for me. Comes in handy if I delete one by mistake! 🙂
        Best wishes from Beetley, Pete.

One of my healthier comfort options is a cup of tea and a good book. I too like to curl up in blankets on the sofa. If I am really cold I will have a bubble bath before bed to help warm the body so I can sleep.

My dogs and cats provide comfort when I’m having a difficult day. There’s something about having a bed full of animals surrounding me that is reassuring. My daughters, who have sensory issues, have a variety of ways that provide comfort when they are having challenging days. My youngest one – especially when she was little – would lay under about 15 blankets in a dark, cool room. It made a HUGE difference for her ability to get through the rest of the day.

Hi Ann, Thankyou for sharing your sources of comfort. Pets are a wonderful comforts. I’ve only tried 2 blankets, but might seek out some more after your recommendation!
